Table View

It took us a while to find Table View ... but it really is a spectacular view of Table Mountain, Devil's Peak and Lions Head ... and a lovely beach too!

Getting an icecream at the beach! A really cool "99" with the flake inside the icecream ... mmmh!

Maggie & Henry and the Penguins ...

We had a lovely visit from Maggie and Henry who were in Cape Town for a week before heading up to Pretoria. It was lovely to see them and catch up, visit some penguins, drink some JC LeRoux (thanks Phil & Jude!).

Days until the World Cup ...

Each time I pass through Johannesburg Airport I see the count-down to the World Cup. At this point it was 629 days ...

Pretoria ...

The view from the Voortrekker Monument of Pretoria ....

Inside the Voortrekker Monument

Inside the monument are marble panels with scenes carved. The picture above is the departure of the Voortrekkers from the Cape.

The Cenotaph.

"Ons vir jou Suid Afrika" We for thee, South Africa
(taken from the South African song "Die Stem van Suid Afrika")

Each year at 12 o'clock on 16 December there is a ray of sunlight falls on the inscription.

Voortrekker Monument

For my Afrikaans education and to play the touristy card in Pretoria I visited the Voortrekker Monument (thanks Flip!) ... it commemorates the history of the Afrikaaners who trekked inland from the Cape (the Voortrekkers) ... and is one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in South Africa (so I'm told!).

Statue of mother and child symbolizing the culture during the Great Trek.

The corner figures form a guard of honour.

The 64 wagons around the outside are symbolic of protection of the monument.

Borrowing Uthra's tiara ...

The Awards!

Our department wiped the board of awards at the conference ...

Kathy announcing the winners ...

Honourable mention for Bali ...

Second place for Uthra ...

Winner of the Wyndham price to Ben!

Here I am with my prize for the best oral presentation on sport ... before I'd given the presentation :-)
